Qualifies individuals to drive HGV Category C+E vehicles professionally

Course overview
The LGV driver apprenticeship programme enables drivers to get their HGV Category C+E licence and acquire the skills and knowledge to work as a professional driver.
Employers can use this programme to upskill existing employees or recruit new staff to fill their HGV driver vacancies.
The LGV driver apprenticeship is for individuals who need to obtain their Category C+E to drive articulated vehicles in their job.
The participant will undertake one or two weeks of practical driving & safety training which includes the driving test and practical safety demonstration test (Mod 4). In addition, they will undertake online classroom sessions on the following topics:
Module 1 – Professional Standards & Awareness of Industry
Module 2- Health and Safety including Safe Systems of Work
Module 3- Preparing the Vehicle for Driving
Module 4 – Principles of Load Handling and Restraints
Module 5 – Safe and Efficient Driving
Module 6 – Technology and Sustainability in Logistics
Module 7- Vulnerable Road Users & Inner-City Restrictions
Module 8- Customer Service & Cross team working
The practical driving training takes place at one of our driving schools. The rest of the apprenticeship is delivered online in sessions led by a specialist TRS coach.
The driving element of this apprenticeship is assessed through a practical test with a DVSA examiner.
After completing all the online classroom modules, individuals will be also be assessed by an independent external organisation. This assessment includes a multiple choice test and an interview with an assessor to test knowledge and understanding of what the individual has learnt on the course.
On successful completion, the participant will have achieved a level 2 apprenticeship and their HGV category C+E licence.

- Develop practical skills: Gain hands-on experience in vehicle preparation, safe and efficient driving, load handling, and workplace practices.
Large firms(+250 staff members) have 100% of course costs covered by their apprenticeship levy funds.
For small and medium-sized businesses (less than 250 staff members), the government funds 95% of the course, with the employer contributing 5%. Sometimes, the 5% can be covered by through other funding opportunities, which means there are no costs at all.
There is no cost to the candidate who does the course.
Once completing the LGV driver apprenticeship, participants can plan to progress to a team leader or transport and warehouse operations supervisor apprenticeship if they wish to move into leadership roles. Please visit our courses page for details of which higher level apprenticsehips we offer.
Our enrolment process is straightforward. Once they have the approval of their employer, the participant:
- completes an online application form
- undertakes some online assessments
- attends an onboarding call with the TRS enrolment officer
After this, training begins.
To start an apprenticeship, individuals must be 16 or over, living in England, and have the right to work in the UK. They must not be in full-time education when the apprenticeship begins.
Apprentices need to be employed and earning a wage, whether as a new recruit or an existing employee being upskilled. The role they’re in must be directly relevant to the apprenticeship and allow them to develop and practice the required skills.
They cannot be enrolled on another funded apprenticeship or DfE-funded programme at the same time.
Individuals must have a full car licence before applying for this course.
