Professional urban driving
The urban driver apprenticeship is a structured, work-based programme that prepares drivers to operate safely and professionally in urban transport environments. It includes practical HGV Cat C/C1 driver training alongside online classroom learning in route planning, vehicle loading, customer delivery standards, compliance with transport legislation, and effective communication. Through a combination of hands-on driving and guided learning, participants develop the capability to deliver goods safely, on time, and in line with legal and operational requirements across a wide range of urban transport and supply chain settings.
The urban driver apprenticeship is for individuals who need to gain their HGV Cat C/C1 licence to work in a professional capacity. It’s ideal for upskilling warehouse operatives, porters, office staff or other team members to drive large goods vehicles.

Module 2 Awareness of industry; DVSA legislation
Module 3 Health and fitness to drive
Module 4 Preparing the vehicle for driving
Module 5 Safe and efficient driving
Module 6 Technology in transport industry
Module 7 Vulnerable users; inner city restrictions
Module 8 Customer service, LGV driver responsibilities
Between months 4 and 6 of the apprenticeship, the participant will undertake a week’s driver training and sit their test.
The candidate completes one week’s in-person practical driver training. They also undertake the apprenticeship modules through online classroom sessions led by their TRS skills coach.
After completing all the modules, they will be assessed by an independent external organisation. The assessment includes:
- Multiple choice test
- Practical assessment
- Interview
On completion, the candidate will have achieved a level 2 apprenticeship and will receive a certificate. They will also achieve their HGV Cat C/C1 licence.
This apprenticeship provides employers with a funded programme for upskilling their staff to have their HGV Cat C/C1 licence alongside logistics industry skills and knowledge to drive:

Large firms(+250 staff members) have 100% of course costs covered by their apprenticeship levy funds.
For small and medium-sized businesses (less than 250 staff members), the government funds 95% of the course, with the employer contributing 5%. Sometimes, the 5% can be covered by through other funding opportunities, which means there are no costs at all.
There is no cost to the candidate who does the course.
The urban driver apprenticeship opens the door to jobs that require the HGV Cat C/C1 licence. On completion, participants may want to consider furthering their career as a transport manager or team leader through level 3 apprenticeships.
Our enrolment process is straightforward. Once they have the approval of their employer, the participant:
- completes an online application form
- undertakes some online assessments
- attends an onboarding call with the TRS enrolment officer
After this, training begins.
To start an apprenticeship, individuals must be 16 or over, living in England, and have the right to work in the UK. They must not be in full-time education when the apprenticeship begins.
Apprentices need to be employed and earning a wage, whether as a new recruit or an existing employee being upskilled. The role they’re in must be directly relevant to the apprenticeship and allow them to develop and practice the required skills.
They cannot be enrolled on another funded apprenticeship or DfE-funded programme at the same time.
Participants must have their car driving licence.
A minimum of 8 months.
